BioNTech and Pfizer will start a clinical trial of a Covid-19 vaccine adapted to the BA.4 and BA.5 variants of Omicron this month, as the German biotech forecasts an increase in demand at the end of the year.Regulators are trying to balance the need to keep up with new variants by using the most up-to-date vaccine available, with a desire to ensure confidence in the safety and efficacy of the shots.www.ft.com/content/b6825ee8-3631-4f1c-a4e0-119802c7bb7d #COVID19 #vaccine #BioNTech #Pfizer ... Politicians in the European Union are planning to introduce the first comprehensive global template for regulating AI, as institutions increasingly automate routine tasks in an attempt to boost efficiency and ultimately cut costs. That legislation, known as the Artificial Intelligence Act, will have consequences beyond EU borders, and like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, will apply to any institution that serves EU customers.“The impact of the act, once adopted, cannot be overstated,” said Alexandru Circiumaru, European public policy lead at the Ada Lovelace Institute.www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/aug/07/ai-eu-moves-to-beat-the-algorithms-that-ruin-lives #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #EU #EuropeanUnion ... In a run-of-the-mill business park in Kvistgård, a Danish village about 40 kilometres north of Copenhagen encircled by forests, lies one of the most crucial solutions for controlling the global monkeypox outbreak. These are the manufacturing facilities of Bavarian Nordic, the biotech company that is the sole producer of the most advanced vaccine for monkeypox.Called Jynneos in the United States, Imvanex in Europe, and Imvamune in Canada, the vaccine is the only one that has been approved by the European Medicines Agency and the US Food and Drug Administration for preventing people from developing or transmitting monkeypox. The problem? Bavarian Nordic’s manufacturing facilities have been shut until very recently, and most of the vaccine doses it produced before it closed are currently sitting frozen in plastic bags, not yet usable.www.wired.co.uk/article/monkeypox-vaccine-supply-chain #MonkeyPox ... 50 years ago, on the 22nd of January 1972, Ireland 50 years ago, on the 22nd of January 1972, Ireland signed the Treaty of Accession to join the European Communities. In May of that year the people of Ireland overwhelmingly ratified this through a referendum and on 1st January 1973 Ireland acceded to the European Communities. Ireland’s 50 years of membership coincided with radical economic & social transformation of our country. From an isolated island on the periphery of Europe with a small economy, developed into one of the most open, globalised, advanced and progressive societies in the world. Over the course of the year, there will be a series of events to commemorate Ireland’s accession and in conjunction with the Communicating Europe initiative, The European Network will publish a series of articles by leading commentators celebrating our membership of the EU. We hope you can join us on our social media channels to celebrate Ireland in the EU. All articles will be published weekly on our web platform.
